Namrita & Munish (PGP 1995)

NAMRITA MITTAL & MUNISH BANSAL PGP 1995

“Indian Institute of Matrimony” is what Kartik said when he heard about the Alumnus issue on couples that met at IIMA! Considering the number of couples from our class of 1995, that may not be far from the truth!

This topic is front and center for us these days as over the past few months (since the Manis moved from Singapore), we have created a strong network of IIMA couples from our batch in the New York/ New Jersey area – Kartik Mani and Kavita Prakash, Shobha Meera and Nishesh Kumar, TVR Murti and Sukanya Kuruganthi (Batch of ’96), and Munish Bansal and Namrita Mittal (me). We meet at least once a month for the day and reminisce our time spent at IIMA. Playing carom at these get-togethers, enhances the nostalgia! It’s a wonderful feeling to spend time with folks who have seen you at your best and your worst!

While each of us has a unique story to begin with, the journey has reached a similar point for all of us – over the years, we have created a family with a stable and comfortable relationship with each other, where we cannot imagine a life without our mate!

Munish and Namrita (a.k.a. Bansi and Nammo)…who would have thought that the alphabetical system of seating arrangement in the classrooms would initiate a relationship for a lifetime! In section C, while Munish ended the seating for student names starting with M, Namrita began the seating for student names starting with N (technically Nagarajan Shyam did, but he had a single seat to the side!). The physical proximity in class positions blossomed into a friendship that grew strong at an accelerated pace and within about a month or two of joining the program, we were a ‘pair’ in our batch! Though Professor X (let’s keep that name a secret!) called Munish in his office and warned him – “these girls from Delhi University come here to catch boys from IIT!’ Munish did not heed this advice and kept going. Aided by Rambhai”s bun samosa and chai, night outs working on group projects and dinners at our favourite local restaurants, the bond grew stronger each day. With our apparent height difference (six feet and five feet), we also came to be known as the Jaya – Amitabh couple. We spent more and more time with each other, to the extent that my dorm mates at D11 considered Munish an honorary member of D11.
Before we knew, time had flown and we both had our jobs after campus – Munish at Citi in Mumbai, while I at Deutsche in Delhi. Living in two different cities after spending practically all of our time together on campus for two years was hard for both of us. We were engaged in May 1995 and got married in November 1996 – after we had somewhat ‘settled’ in our jobs!

The journey till date has been great – full of ups and downs, laughter and fights. We are now settled in the US and are the proud parents of Tarika (15) and Nikhil (12). In December’15, we took them to Ahmedabad for our twentieth reunion and shared with them this place where our story began.
