Srilata & Akbar (PGP 1975)

By Professor R Venkatesh (PGP86) – University of Pittsburg (Katz school)

On the topic of IIMA couples. …. A bunch of us were traveling from Mumbai to Bangalore on the Udyan Express (I think). Hi-tempo as always, especially because we were heading home. An elderly couple seated nearby was overhearing our WIMWI gossip. The lady then quietly asked if we were from IIMA and went on to say that her daughter Srilata (Sri) was an IIMAite as well.

As most IIMs are, the ‘Indian Institutes of Matchmaking’, we were curious if Sri married a batch mate. Yes, said the lady, Sri married Akbar (Aks) Zaheer (both from the ’75 batch). She went on to say that Akbar’s aunts presented the groom with a copy of the Koran on wedding day. Not to be outdone, Sri’s parents presented the bride with a copy of the Bhagavad Gita. Well, the couple have been married for over 40 years.

Both went on to get PhDs from MIT and are chaired professors at University of Minnesota’s Carlson School. Sri is the current Dean.

I got to tell Sri years later of the chance meeting with her mom on the train. We had a good laugh.
