Synopsis
The book arose out of the need to document the fascinating journey of MICA, an institution that was conceived of by Mudra and crafted with the inspiration of the Late Chairman and Managing Director Mr A.G.Krishnamurthy. Dr Shailendra Mehta, President and Director MICA, Dr Shubhra P Gaur, Associate Dean and Registrar and Alan D’Souza have co-authored this coffee table book.
The book traces the genesis of MICA, its culture and the important milestones in its journey. It covers practically every aspect of the Institute’s development–the recruitment of the directors, the roles they played in the journey, the development of the infrastructure, the recruitment of faculty, the development of the curriculum and the pedagogy, student activities, Industry interface and research.
Author bios
Shailendra Raj Mehta
Dr. Shailendra Raj Mehta is currently President and Director of MICA, where he is also Distinguished Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Prior to this he headed Auro University (as Chairman of the Board of Management and Acting Vice-Chancellor) and Ahmedabad University (as Provost and Vice-Chancellor). He returned to India in 2006 to head the collaboration between Duke CE (Duke University’s Corporate Education Arm) and IIM-A, and also taught at IIM-A as Visiting Professor of Business Policy. Prior to that he was at Purdue University for 16 years, where he taught Economics and Strategic Management and has been awarded one of Purdue University’s highest awards, the Class of 1922 Award for Teaching, Innovation and Helping Students Learn.
He is formally rated as one of the top researchers in the country in the field of Strategy in terms of global impact. His BA and MA are from Delhi University (St. Stephen’s and DSE), his M.Phil. is from Balliol College, Oxford, and his Ph.D. is from Harvard.
Alan D’Souza (PGP 74)
Alan D’souza was the Executive Director of Mudra Communications Ltd and worked closely with A.G. Krishnamurthy in setting up MICA. He was also on the MICA Governing Council for many years and was responsible for designing and implementing several initiatives in MICA in the initial years. He was the Dean of MICORE, an institution dedicated to Research in Communication Management within MICA.
Alan D’souza is an Alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad and has over five decades of experience in Industry and Academics in the Area of Marketing, Branding and Advertising. He has worked with Multinational Pharmaceutical companies such as Boehringer-Knoll and Glaxo and Indian advertising agencies such as Shilpi and Mudra. He was also the Director of the Goa Institute of Management for a brief period. Apart from MICA, he was responsible for laying a strong academic foundation for the Shanti Business School as one of the founders.
Shubhra P. Gaur
Shubhra P. Gaur, the Registrar, Associate Dean (Academics) and Professor at MICA. She has a D.Phil in Psychology from the University of Allahabad and has three decades of research, teaching and academic leadership experience. She has been at MICA since 2001 in various leadership roles; she also was a member of the Faculty Recruitment Committee and spokesperson of the institute’s Corporate and Alumni Relations Committee in 2023-24, and Co-Chair of International Immersions for several years.
She has earlier taught at the University of Delhi. She has been a visiting faculty at the IIM Ahmedabad, School of Petroleum Management (SPM), Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) Gandhinagar, Mahatma Gandhi Labour Institute, Ahmedabad. She has been on the Board of Studies and Research Development Committees of several institutions.
