Synopsis
“The Lives She Carried” is inspired by the story of the author’s Paati (grandmother), a barely educated village woman who was brought up to be a patient, subservient wife, but who chose instead to become a brave mother. One who was determined that her children, especially the girls, would walk a different path from the one she herself trod.
The book explores the key themes of resilience, determination, sacrifice, and female economic empowerment. Through this book, the author honours not only her Paati, but also the millions of unsung women who have toiled uncomplainingly to shape their families’ stories. They will never win a Param Vir Chakra for valour, but that doesn’t make their bravery any less deserving.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Aarti Narayan was born and educated in India. After obtaining her MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad in 1997, she worked in the corporate world for over twenty-five years, where her writing was largely confined to strategy papers and business presentations.
Three of her short essays have been featured in the New York Times’ Modern Love: Tiny Love Stories (“Grateful My Prayers Went Unanswered”, “Divine Protection”, and “A Memory of Lights”). “The Lives She Carried” is her maiden novel, published by Author in Me, an award-winning British small press. It has sold over 600 copies to date and has 80+ five-star reviews on Goodreads (average 4.66).
Aarti currently lives in Singapore with her husband (also IIMA-PGP 1997) and their children.
